Calf Implants (Calf Augmentation)
Many people are dissatisfied with the shape/size
of their calf muscles to the point that they avoid wearing garments that
expose their legs. In these instances, even intensive exercise may not
significantly enlarge the calf muscles, particularly in relation to ones
larger thigh muscles. Calf implants can also be used to correct deformities
resulting from injury or nerve diseases that result in muscle deterioration.
Calf augmentation using solid, soft silicone implants addresses these
concerns.
Both men and women seek calf implants for different reasons. While men
typically seek an appearance that emphasizes the bulk of the calf muscle,
women usually desire calf implants for purposes of anatomical balance,
where the lower leg is sculpted to be more proportionate to the thighs.
A critical element in determining the right size and shape is based on
the skill of the surgeon who can assess the proportions correctly, thereby
anticipating any changes after the surgery.
Generally, anyone in average physical condition or good health can be
a candidate for calf implant surgery.
Individually contoured implants are placed on top of the calf muscles
through short incisions behind each knee. The result is an immediate increase
in the appearance of muscle size and definition. The patient is usually
able to walk comfortably within several days and may return
to full physical activities within 4-6 weeks. Surgical risks are few,
but may include among others: infection, bleeding, nerve and/or muscle
damage, slippage and asymmetry.
